Hwayoung and I are pleased to present these improvised duets for 12-string gayageum and acoustic piano, which were recorded without edits or overdubs at Doug Pohoroski’s Acoustic Sound Shop studio in San Jose, California.

To be sure, few musicians in this region are amenable to performance in the moment – essentially, responding to what one hears, in real-time, without regard to written scores, in two dimensions. In a word, this is music without a net; erasures or “corrections” are impossible.

The session gelled, moments into the first piece. It was apparent that Hwayoung and I had found a common ground, based on our shared musical interests. A great virtuosa, she is especially open-minded as a performer, consistently using innovative techniques, and approaches.

We hope that will you enjoy these marvelous moments; a beautiful synthesis of two acoustic instruments, and their shared traditions.
